ANC integrity committee to scrutinise candidate lists

The African National Congress (ANC) says it has submitted its candidate lists for Parliament and provincial legislatures to the party’s integrity commission.

The governing party has come under fire for its national list, which includes Mosebenzi Zwane, Bathabile Dlamini, Malusi Gigaba and Nomvula Mokonyane.
The members have all been implicated in state capture or have significant court judgments against them.
The ANC’s deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte says the national executive committee (NEC) has moved to referred the candidate lists for the upcoming elections to the commission.
Duarte briefed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
“The ANC set an even higher bar, removing all candidates with criminal records (not just for 5 years, but longer) and subjected all its candidates to a vetting process.”
She says more than 800 nominations were received by branches to represent the party in Parliament of provincial legislatures.
Duarte denied allegations that the lists were amended following the nominations.
“We are confident that, after a lengthy process, our lists meet all of these requirements.”
