The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has named Nomusa Dube-Ncube as its candidate to succeed outgoing premier Sihle Zikalala, who announced his resignation last week.
The party made the announcement at a press briefing held in Durban on Monday morning.
It spent the weekend interviewing Dube-Ncube, as well as Amanda Bani, and Mbali Fraizer, who were the three names put forward as possible replacements for Zikalala.
Addressing media at the Pixley Ka Isaka Seme House, newly elected provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo said they were proud to announce the province's first female premier-elect on the eve of Women's Day.
"We know that non-sexism is embedded in the ANC's very core mission. We pride ourselves that as the ANC in KZN, we have moved one more step ahead to the realisation of women's emancipation and the founding principles of the Freedom Charter."
Mtolo said the party was confident in Dube-Ncube's leadership capabilities.
"She is not new in the leadership position as she previously served in various positions in the organisation and in government. Born in KwaMashu is armed with a Masters's Degree in Public Administration, and is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal."
Dube Ncube, who is serving as the KZN Finance MEC, has accepted the nomination.
