ANC mourns the passing of Mendi Msimang

Former African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Mendi Msimang has passed away.

The party stalwart was the widow of the late former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
Msimang was elected to serve as the first chairperson of the ANC caucus in 1994 and in 1995 he was appointed as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He was then elected in 1997 as treasurer general of the ruling party, a position he held until 2007.

"We salute him for his unwavering and steadfast commitment to serve selflessly and with humility," says ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe, who describes Msimang as an outstanding leader.
"He was a leader of the ANC and one that we are proud to have been part of and to celebrate."
The cause of Msimang's death has not been disclosed.
