ANC mum on Gauteng PEC's call for Zuma to 'do the right thing'

The ANC said it would not formally respond to the call made by the party's Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee for President Jacob Zuma to "do the right thing".

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said all the ANC's structures would have their own individual discussions on the Constitutional Court's Nkandla ruling and the president's apology.

This means nearly 70 such meetings and discussion would be held.

Mantashe said the party would respond as a collective once the process has been concluded.

"We are now busy...we can't react to everyone, we will all be bored with that," Mantashe said.

Meanwhile, political analyst Ralph Mathekga said the ANC in Gauteng's call on President Zuma was not unexpected.

"This has been the consistent position from the ANC in Gauteng for quite a while. Actually, since the Mangaung conference, they are known not to have been in support of President Jacob Zuma," Mathekga said.

The impact, however, could widen the divide within the ruling party he said.

"The provinces are quite divided about President Zuma and about this issue, so expect other provinces to make their own pronouncements."
