ANC NEC to manage ‘two centres of power’

The African National Congress’ (ANC) National Executive Committee will have to manage the two centres of power – Luthuli House and Union Buildings – as soon as the national conference concludes, says the chairperson of the ANC’s sub committee on organisational renewal Fikile Mbalula.

He was briefing media after the sub committee’s recommendations were presented to the plenary at the 54th national conference.

Mbalula says the ANC, which gives mandates to officials in the state, is the true centre of power.

Mbalula says should the issue arise of a possible recall of President Jacob Zuma, it will be a decision of the NEC.

He says the committee also agreed with the recommendations of the Public Protector’s report into state capture and resolved that a judicial commission of inquiry needs to be instituted as soon as possible.

“The NEC said we agree with the judicial commission of inquiry which arise from the Public Protector recommendations, so they need to be implemented expeditiously,” says Mbalula.

The powers of the integrity committee also need to be expanded.

He says when the committee finds a member has brought the party into disrepute, it should not have to ask the NEC before a member can appear before it.

“Now we are talking, we know that we are not in a space where we can do as we wish,” explains Mbalula. “There is integrity that must be enforced.”
