ANC: Rupert is an ‘ungrateful parasite'
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
The ANC has hit back at comments reportedly made by South African billionaire, Johann Rupert, that radical economic transformation is "a code word for theft".
Party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa described Rupert's remarks as disingenious and referred to the business mogul as "an ungrateful parasite".
Rupert reportedly made the remarks on the sidelines of the Richemont Annual General Meeting in Geneva on Wednesday.
Kodwa says despite the fact that Rupert continues to benefit financially from a democratic South Africa, he continues to encourage disinvestment from the country.
He adds, people such as Rupert continue to exploit the majority of black South Africans and that he does not care about those still trapped in poverty.
"Seventy percent of our economy can't remain in the hands of white males like Johann Rupert," says Kodwa, "We must change because if we don't redistribute wealth, it's a source of instability in this country."
Kodwa says the governing party is unapologetic in its stance that the South African economy must be changed.
