ANC on Tshwane forgery claims: ‘We did not forge our own signatures’

The African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane has strongly denied allegations that its caucus forged councillors’ signatures in an attempt to convene a special council sitting.

This comes after the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the capital city laid charges of fraud against the regional ANC leadership on Monday for allegedly forging signatures on a petition asking for a special council.

The Tshwane council will sit in a special council meeting on Thursday, where a motion of no confidence against Tshwane council speaker Katlego Mathebe and mayor Stevens Mokgalapa is expected to be tabled.

ANC Tshwane chairperson Kgosi Maepa says it is impossible for the ANC caucus to forge its councillors own signatures.

“Those are their signatures, if anyone has to complain about signatures the complainant must be the ANC councillors, not the DA.

“It’s a tactic and all these things that they use to try create hype and confusion.”

He adds that the charges are an attempt to distract from the special council sitting on Thursday.

“They are distracting from Thursday but we are going ahead on Thursday, the meeting has been set and we are going ahead.”
