ANC worried about Covid-19 surge during Easter
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa says the governing party is concerned about a possible increase in new Covid-19 infections during the Easter holidays.
Ramaphosa made the remarks on Monday evening, during his closing address following a national executive committee (NEC) meeting.
"The meeting emphasised concern at a possibility of increased transmission of the virus during the Easter and other holidays in the coming weeks," said Ramaphosa.
"The ANC wishes strongly to reiterate the advice that has been given by our scientists and health authorities for all South Africans to exercise maximum care and to act responsibly so that we can avoid a potentially devastating third wave of infections."
Ramaphosa, in his capacity as president of the republic, is expected to address the country this week on possible stricter lockdown measures, including the number of people allowed at a gathering and a possible ban on the sale of alcohol.
The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) is expected to discuss possible stricter lockdown regulations during a meeting on Tuesday.
