Andile Lungisa to spend first night behind bars
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
African National Congress (ANC) councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay Andile Lungisa will spend his first night behind bars on Thursday.
Lungisa presented himself for incarceration at Port Elizabeth's North End Prison on Thursday.
He is set to serve a two-year jail sentence for the assault of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, Ryno Kayser, during a scuffle in the Nelson Mandela Bay council in 2016.
Last week, the Supreme Court of Appeal rejected his application for leave to appeal the sentence, saying that it found no grounds to interfere with the sentence imposed by the trial court.
He’s now appealing his sentence at the Constitutional Court.
On Thursday, Lungisa told reporters that he is hopeful about his application in the Grahamstown High Court and his Constitutional Court bid.
“We know the Constitutional Court is led by honourable men and women that will be able to see what has happened. We are hopeful about the Constitutional Court,” he said.
