SA doctor now finalising his visa

South African doctor Cyril Karabus could not re-apply for his visa in time to leave the UAE on Wednesday morning, and would have to wait another day before he can fly out of Abu Dhabi back to Cape Town. The 78-year old Paediatric oncologist has been struggling to get his passport since March when a court acquitted him on charges of manslaughter.

His son, Michael Karabus, says on Thursday morning his dad was at the visa offices very early in order to correct the problem with the date on his visa and allow him to fly out of the UAE early on Friday morning.

"And he is expected to land in Cape Town at 12 noon on Friday".

Michael Karabus says no big parties have as yet been arranged for the week end, with the first priority a medical check-up on the elderly doctor. He has been experiencing extreme stress and frustration while battling to get his passport and visa.

"I wanna see him in the flesh and then I'll finally believe that he is back here. We will have a bit of a party at the airport when he arrives. That I am looking forward to", said Michael Karabus.

The 78-year-old paediatric oncologist had been detained in the UAE since August 18, after being sentenced in absentia for the death of a Yemeni girl he treated for leukaemia in 2002. Karabus was acquitted on March 21, and won a subsequent appeal. His return to South Africa was delayed because he was on the UAE's database as a fugitive from justice.
