Another Gauteng pupil dies

The Gauteng Department of Education says boy from Ferndale High School died after falling from the second floor of the building.

Paramedics responded to reports of a fall at a school in Randburg at around 9am on Tuesday.

The Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona says the 16-year-old grade 10 pupil suffered from an epileptic attack and died in hospital.


"The incident occurred this morning where allegedly the boy learner experienced some seizures which emanate from a diagnosis of epilepsy. Unfortunately, the boy fell from the second floor to downstairs.


"The emergency services was called and the boy was attended to on the scene and later taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the boy didn't make it," Mabona says.

Mabona says this death is devastating. 


"We are actually at a loss for words, we don't know what to do anymore.


"It is unfortunate that we need to face the family and say this is what transpired and convey our sincere condolences".


The latest death brings the number of pupil deaths since the start of the year to 11.
