Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says the protestors also tried to set alight a gas bottle.

"We had no choice but to use stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that blocked off the road," he says.

Masondo says no arrests have been made.

"We have opened a docket of public violence and arson and it is being investigated," he says.

Traffic on the R59 has been severely affected.

Meanwhile, members of Thokoza Park in Soweto are also protesting over a lack of electricity in the area.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, says the protest started at around 5 o'clock on Tuesday morning.

"Elias Motsoaledi road has been blocked off with burning tyres and rubble," she says.

Mamonyane urged motorists to avoid Elias Motsoaledi, while busses who feed to the stations in Chris Hani are also not running.

"Metro police and members of the South African Police Service are on the scene at the moment and we are trying to see if we can remove burning tyres and rubble from the road service," Mamonyane says.
