Andries Sefume (42) sexually violated his 23-year-old niece at her grandmother’s house in Bodibe in December 2021.

His court appearance comes after his arrest in December 2022, a year after the crime was committed.

The sentence comes days after the Tlhabane Regional Court sentenced a 55-year-old to 20 years in prison for raping his 6-year-old niece.

“Evidence presented in court revealed that in the early hours of 24 December 2021, the complainant was sleeping at her grandmother’s house in Bodibe, which she had visited for the holidays,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

“The accused, who is her uncle, subsequently knocked, and she opened for him and proceeded to sleep. After a short while, she was awoken by the uncle who was on top of her.”

Mamothame said Sefume pleaded not guilty.

“Following this incident, he fled the scene, and the complainant reported the matter to the neighbours, who alerted the police.

“In aggravation of sentence, the state prosecutor, Itumeleng Boikanyo, urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment, as there were not substantial and compelling circumstances to do so.”
