Another week in the dark for Nigel as city scrambles to fix vandalised pylon
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Frustrated residents of Nigel in Ekurhuleni might have to wait another week for power to be restored in the area.
The area has been without electricity for four days after an electricity pylon collapsed following theft.
The pylon was damaged during an incident of theft last Sunday.
The city's spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says they will install temporary structures to provide electricity.
"The short-term plan is to erect a temporary structure to have at least one of the two circuits energised which may carry 100% of the load without any contingency.
"This should happen in the next seven days and the city is engaging with material suppliers and contractors to speedily assist with this process."
But Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Wollaston Labuschagne believes the municipality needs to move much quicker to restore power.
"We are trying to get hold of the HOD, we will even try to get hold of the MMC just to get some feedback. All we need is for a contractor to be appointed and offer to repair, and apparently there is a contractor at play.
"It is this type of red tape created by the current administration preventing the repairs from starting."
