Anyone found instigating election unrest will be arrested, warns Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has given law enforcement agencies its marching orders, saying anyone linked to violence during the elections will find themselves behind bars.

The president said this would include those found to have instigated any unrest in the run-up to the polls on 29 May.


 


Ramaphosa’s warning came hot on the heels of remarks by the leader of the MK Party in KZN, who said there would be “bloodshed” if the party is barred from contesting elections.


 


Visvin Reddy spoke outside a Durban court on Tuesday.  


 


The ANC has taken the Electoral Commission to court over the registration of the MK Party with a name and logo similar to that of the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association. 


 


Ramaphosa spoke to the media during his walkabout at the Middelburg Hospital ahead of his Presidential Imbizo in Mpumalanga on Thursday.


 


"I just want to make it very clear to everyone who is threatening any form of unrest. They will be followed up and arrested. Those are people who belong in jail, people who are enemies of our democracy. 


 


"South Africans value this hard-earned democracy, and they do not want any form of instability. 


 


"We have always followed the rule of law. When you are not satisfied with any decision, there are ways in which all those complaints can be followed up.”
