Limpopo town burns after being refused its own municipality.
Police reinforcements were sent to Malamulele in Limppopo where violent protests erupted into chaos on Tuesday morning.
Local police struggled to contain the peace as 20 000 people took over the streets looting shops, burning buildings and setting a home affairs office alight.
The anger followed the decision by the municipal demarcation board to not grant Malamulele its own municipality.
By Tuesday afternoon, scores of protesters were arrested while the area also saw a second day of closed schools and closed off stores.
Police confirmed they were outnumbered calling the situation "out of control" and urging the public to avoid going near the area.
