The contract includes vehicles used by the Johannesburg metro police.

City spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane refuted claims by ANC caucus leader in Johannesburg Dada Morero that Avis collected the vehicles on Wednesday due to non-payment.

“What we can confirm is that yes, the fleet contract that we had with Avis has come to an end. The city can clearly state that it does not owe Avis a cent currently,” Modingoane said.

Modingoane said the city is working on mitigating the impact of the lost capacity and will have to ‘redesign’ operations, so they remain effective over the festive period.

“We agree that the most affected entities are JMPD and Joburg Water in particular but as the city, we are looking at other options to try and make sure the Festive Safety campaign does not get negatively affected. We have several contracts running parallel but this one, in particular, is the one that came to an end."

Last month, homeowners were left with uncollected refuse after the fleet contract for Pikitup expired. Modingoane confirmed the issue has been resolved.

“We have even procured additional tipper trucks to assist with illegal dumping. So, we can assure residents that the services will continue throughout the festive season.”
