Police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe says the prisoners were being transported from the Haenertsburg police station near Tzaneen to Polokwane.

One of the prisoners was re-arrested not long after the daring escape.

"The remaining four escapees who were arrested for different crimes which they committed in the Haenertsburg policing precinct, are still at large," says Ngoepe.

The men are facing a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
