Axed ministers Sisulu, Mthethwa and Nkoana-Mashabane resign as MPs

Former ministers who were axed from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet last week have resigned as members of Parliament.

The former minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and People with Disabilities Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa and former tourism minister Lindiwe Sisulu submitted their resignation to  National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula on Wednesday.

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo confirmed that the resignations were effective immediately.

" The speaker has thanked both for their service and wished them well in their future endeavours," he said.

The office of the ANC’s chief whip also confirmed that former deputy minister of water and sanitation Dikeledi Magadzi and former transport minister Fikile Mbalula also submitted their resignation letters.

Nkoana-Mashabane, Mthethwa, Sisulu and Magadzi were given the boot to make way for new faces in Ramaphosa's cabinet.

Sisulu has been part of the executive since 1996 and served under Presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and President Cyril Rampahosa.

She has led several ministries including tourism, international relations, human settlements, water and sanitation, defence, public service and administration, housing, human settlements and intelligence.

Mthethwa has been in the executive since 2008 having served as minister of safety and security and minister of police before being appointed as minister of sports,arts and culture under the Ramaphosa administration. 

Nkoana-Mashabane served as the minister of rural development and land reform, and minister of international relations and cooperation before being appointed to the  Presidency to lead the ministry of women, youth and persons with disabilities.

Mbalula served as deputy minister of police before being appointed minister of sports and recreation from 2010 to 2017, he was then appointed police minister from 2017 to 2018 and as minister of transport from 2019 to 2023.

Mbalula was moved from cabinet to be based at Luthuli House full-time to focus on his role as ANC secretary-general.
