Minister Angie Motshekga requested an extension from the Health Department, due to the fact that it would fall short of its target of inoculating close to 600 000 educators in a fortnight.

Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the vaccine rollout programme has been extended until next Wednesday.

"The vaccination roll-out programme in the basic education sector has been extended to next week, 14 July. The extension will enable the sector to vaccinate more people but also to mop up where some sites experienced some technical challenges resulting in delays."

To date. 437 386 educators and staff have been vaccinated since the start of the rollout.

The initial target was 582 564.

Mhlanga says the demand for vaccinations has seen the department adding 200 000 people to the list.

"Provinces reported that more and more people were coming forward seeking to be vaccinated. More than 200 000 more people have been added to the list of staff who will get vaccinated."
