Basic income grant, housing, electricity on agenda at ANC policy conference

The ANC admits it’s failed to achieve its social transformation goals since it came to power in 1994.

The governing party will hold its national policy conference this weekend, with social transformation and the issue of poverty, inequality, and unemployment high on its agenda.

Chairperson of the discussion committee on social transformation Lindiwe Sisulu says South Africa has not managed to win the battle against racism.

"At the centre of building a new society is the need to address socio-economic inequalities, which breeds social ills such as high levels of violence, gender-based violence, and femicide including misuse of alcohol and drugs.

"This task includes protecting vulnerable people such as the LGBTQIA+ community, who are subjected to discrimination based on their gender, race, and class. If you measure how far we have gone since 1994 in changing our society, you will find that very little has changed."

Sisulu believes the R350 Covid-19 grant has been a success.

"This has led us to believe that the much-discussed basic income grant would be a welcome relief for the unemployed and the vulnerable. Access to basic income grants will help level the vulnerability of these individuals and cushion them against poverty and hunger."
