African National Congress (ANC) Women's League president Bathabile Dlamini has tested positive for Covid-19.
The party confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday evening.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says Dlamini, who is an former minister and ANC NEC member, has been admitted to hospital.
“We wish Comrade Bathabile a speedy recovery and hope that she successfully completes her medical treatment so that she can return to office and continue serving the movement.”
The news of Dlamini’s hospitalisation comes hours after it emerged that the former social development minister will have to answer to charges of perjury.
The Black Sash Trust said on Tuesday that the Director of Public Prosecutions in Gauteng had decided to prosecute Dlamini for allegedly giving false evidence at a 2018 inquiry.
The inquiry was instituted by the Constitutional Court after it found the former minister had been reckless and grossly negligent in her handling of the social grants crisis in 2017.
She is expected to appear in court in September.
