Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says a building and the local mayor's vehicle had been set alight.
"This violence was allegedly sparked by the decision taken by the council to increase rates by R500," says Mojapelo.
Residents also barricaded roads leading into and inside the township.
"The police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. It is still not clear if anyone from the community got injured," says Mojapelo.
Two police officers were slightly injured when they were hit by stones thrown by protesters.
"Public order police members have been deployed in the area with a nyala to stabilise the situation," says Mojapelo.
Charges of arson, malicious damage to property, and public violence will be opened for investigation.
