Bemawu: Hlaudi Motsoeneng has hijacked the SABC's radio division

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) on Saturday accused Hlaudi Motsoeneng of "hijacking" the radio division.

It emerged yesterday that the public broadcaster's group executive for corporate affairs will now also head up its radio division.
On Friday, Motsoeneng held a meeting with staff where he reportedly told them they now report to him.
Bemawu's Hannes du Buisson says the public broadcaster has a corporate plan which must be signed off by Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi.
"Motsoeneng has just changed that structure. He is a law unto himself," du Buisson says. "There was no consultation. It's an unlawful instruction and we are going to ask managers not to comply with it."
He says the union is consulting its members about whether they would be willing to embark on a strike "to put an end to this madness".
On Friday, the SABC denied any knowledge of Motsoeneng's new role within its radio division.

Earlier this week, Parliament's communications portfolio committee took a unanimous decision to institute an inquiry into the fitness of the current SABC board - if its remaining members refused to resign from their positions.
They expressed their lack of faith in the board after it reappointed Motsoeneng to another senior position.

Last month, the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed Motsoeneng's application for leave to appeal a High Court ruling that his permanent appointment should be set aside.
