Big plans to expand the Gautrain service
Updated | By Samkelo Maseko
Gauteng MEC of Transport Ismail Vadi says 12 more trains will be added to the Gautrain service.
MEC's in the province's economic cluster briefed the media on their plans for the year.
Vadi says three companies will be tendering to manufacture the 12 new trains, which are set to be operational by 2019.
The MEC says the new trains are needed due to peak-time demand.
"We see the need to increase the rolling stocks. A bidding process has been completed. Three companies of prospective bidders have been shortlisted. They will submit their bids by the middle of this year. These will be assessed and hopefully by November this year we will make an announcement with regards to the preferred bidder," says Vadi.
Vadi also says there will be a considerable expansion of the Gautrain service over the next 10 to 15 years.
