Billions needed to repair KZN flood-hit areas
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Minister of Cooperative Governance says discussions are under way on whether to declare KZN's flood-affected municipalities disaster zones.
Thembi Nkadimeng says in one area, the estimated total cost of the damage caused by torrential rains has climbed to R2-billion.
She says more funds are needed to repair damaged roads and infrastructure in other parts. "We believe the president will give guidance concerning the disaster as he is supposed to.
Currently, as Cogta at the national and provincial level, we have not necessarily declared the province but the areas according to what the law allows us to do to be able to release a budget."
The province has been battered by heavy rains that claimed the lives of more than 20 people in recent weeks. Some municipalities, including eThekwini, Uthukela, Ilembe, Ugu and Kwadukuza have been classified as disaster areas.
