The Border Management Authority said on Sunday that there had been a 24% increase in the number of travellers processed across the country’s 71 ports of entry over Easter.
The Border Management Authority Commissioner Mike Masiapato briefed the media on its Easter weekend operations.
Commissioner Mike Masiapato told a press briefing in Pretoria that at least 3,800 people trying to enter the country illegally were stopped over the Easter period
"Out of this number of intercepted individuals, about 2,403 did not have any documents at all, about 1,019 were refused entry for being undesirable, and about 419 were found inadmissible to enter the country due to various reasons.
“A majority of those arrested without documents were intercepted at the vulnerable segments of the borderline. They were processed, declared undesirable for five years and were deported.”
At the same time, Masiapato said there has been a decrease in the number of undocumented and unaccompanied minors at the country's ports of entry.
"Despite this positive observation, we, however, on Thursday the 28th of March 2024, intercepted about five children at the Beitbridge port of entry.
“We handed them to the colleagues from the Department of Social Development who activated their social workers in Musina. They engaged their Zimbabwean counterparts and processed the children back to Zimbabwe.”
