The company, Innovative Staffing Solutions (ISS), says internal investigations have revealed that the 32-year-old driver was not negligent.

The tanker, transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), was caught beneath a bridge close to Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg on Christmas Eve.

Approximately 30 minutes after the truck got stuck, it ignited – leaving a trail of destruction and at least 27 people dead.

In a media statement, ISS CEO managing Director Arnoux Maré said that “the driver was not negligent and did everything in his power to alert people to the dangers of the situation.”

Maré lauded the man and said that he “demonstrated the utmost level of care and professionalism”.

While conveying his condolences and prayers to the families of the victims, Maré thanked the driver for “his conscientious actions which potentially saved the lives of countless other people.”

He stated that the driver has the correct qualifications and training with “approximately seven years' experience transporting hazardous materials and is highly knowledgeable with regards to the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials.”

The driver is also believed to have warned onlookers and motorists about the looming danger which, according to Maré “would not heed his warnings”.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that there is currently no case against the driver as the police in Gauteng still need to gather evidence against the driver.
