Bongani Baloyi announces formation of new political party
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Former Midvaal mayor Bongani Baloyi has announced the formation of a political party, Xiluva.
The new party’s name means ‘flower’ in Xitsonga.
Baloyi made the announcement during a media briefing in Sandton on Thursday.
This follows his resignation as ActionSA’s Gauteng provincial leader almost three weeks ago.
Baloyi cited “irreconcilable differences” between him and ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba over the running of the party’s Gauteng structures and a difference of opinion about policy issues as the reasons for his resignation.
In January last year, Baloyi joined ActionSA after terminating his membership as a member of the DA in December 2021.

He was a member of the country’s official opposition party for 14 years.
“This is the birth of Xiluva, a political home for those who want a real alternative led by young people. A political party where young people can see themselves in the leadership of the party,” said Baloyi.
He says the new party will be registered with the IEC on Monday, and will contest next year’s national and provincial elections.
“Xiluva will contest the 2024 national and provincial government elections. Over the next few months we will be working to grow Xiluva and define its policies that reflect who we are.
“South Africa's second democratic transition means the ANC's dominance is coming to an end and power as an entity is hanging in the air for anyone to cease it. Time to vote for Nelson Mandela is gone.
“Change is way too slow in South Africa and young people in politics remain displayed, frustrated by gate keepers and are reduced to insignificant participants and spectators. The time for political dinosaurs is over.”
Bongani Baloyi says the focus of the party will be the youth, with values of family, ubuntu, community and multi-racialism.
