New mayor won’t spell end of chaos in Tshwane, predicts analyst

Political analyst Goodenough Mashego says South African political parties need to invest more time and effort into the proper functioning of coalitions.

New mayor won’t spell end of chaos in Tshwane, predicts analyst

Mashego says despite the instability of coalitions in municipalities such as Tshwane and Johannesburg, there is little doubt that it will be part of the political scene in the years to come.

His comments come after the election of the DA’s Cilliers Brink as the new mayor of Tshwane on Tuesday.

During his maiden speech in council, Brink vowed that the multi-party coalition will focus on building a city that works for all its people.

But Mashego says the past few Tshwane mayors have not been able to hold on to the mayoral chain for too long.

“I think Tshwane is an example of what should not happen in South African politics because one can remember that since the councillors were elected, they have never really done any council duty due to the chaos that erupted in the city.

“The election now is a temporary thing, as more chaos is still to erupt because I don’t see the ANC accepting any DA-affiliated party to govern any of the councils. The ANC will not rest for as long as there is someone in a position of power whom they cannot control.”
