Lion on the loose on West Rand
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
A young male lion is on the loose in Fochville on the West Rand.
The Captured in Africa Foundation says the lion is believed to have escaped from its enclosure around five weeks ago.
The foundation's Drew Abrahamson says it's not clear who the lion belongs to or how it escaped.
They are still trying to locate the owners.
"It's a bit of a difficult one. We are thumbsucking at the moment. There aren't any reserves with any wild lion on or sanctuaries in that area. There aren't any breeding farms in that area.
"We think he could possibly have been someone's pet lion."
Abrahamson says they suspect the lion belonged to someone who didn't have a permit for the animal.
Captured in Africa says they have a good idea of where the animal currently is as they've come across a number of kill sites.
