Brink: Tshwane in no position to grant wage hikes
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink says the city would love to give all its employees a salary increase.
Brink spoke on The Drive with Rob and Roz on Monday on the city's failure to deliver some services to residents.
Residents are bearing the brunt of the strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union.
The strike has led to a delayed response to power outages and water supply disruptions, as well as a lack of refuse removal.
The city has been operating with a skeleton staff since workers affiliated with Samwu downed tools in July.
The municipal workers are unhappy over various issues, including the non-payment of salary increases.
Workers are demanding 3.5% and 5.4% salary increases, an amount that Brink said the city cannot afford.
"We simply could not budget for salary increases for officials and councilors for this financial year," Brink said.
"We are applying to the bargaining council to get exemption, we are going to explain our financial situation. We would like to give financial increases in future, we are just not in a position to give it now."
