Brown: I did not appoint Molefe
Updated | By Suné du Toit
The Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown says she did not reappoint Brian Molefe as CEO of Eskom.
Brown is appearing in front of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, where she was asked several times if she was pushed to reappoint Molefe.
Molefe left Eskom under a cloud following the release of the Public Protector's State of Capture report.
"The 2014 Memorandum of Incorporation (MoI) did not require the minister to be noted as a party to the employment agreement of the Group's Chief Executive. In the 2016 - remember I was appointed in 2014 - we relooked the MOI and it requires the minister to be noted as a party to the contract of employment between the Company and the Group Chief Executive," says Brown.
Brown has responded to questions by the DA's John Steenhuisen, the IFP's Narend Singh and former Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan over whether she was pushed by President Jacob Zuma to reappoint Molefe.
"If you all look in my eyes as you ask me that...no. I did not get an instruction to do so," says Brown
Brown, however, says she did brief the ANC following Molefe's reappointment.
"The Top 6 often engages with its deployees and I consider this a normal engagement in that kind of respect," says Brown.
Brown says the presentation she made to the ANC leadership, was similar to the one she making today.
"The Top 6 had long discussions. Myself and the deputy minister were sent back and told that government will have to sort it out. The president, the deputy president and myself had to sort it out. We have established a committee to that effect and it will look at the legal opinions of Eskom and my department and then to make a decision out of that," says Brown.
Brown also addressed Molefe's implication in the Public Protector's state capture report.
"Brian Molefe will never be cleared until there is an investigation into state capture report, but he can't clear himself. That is something we have to do."
