A bus crash claimed the lives of two Wedela Technical High School pupils on Thursday.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says it is believed that the accident took place when pupils were on their way home.
"According to information at our disposal, the incident occurred around the Western Deep mine shaft #2 in the afternoon, as learners were being transported home. It is alleged that the driver lost control of the bus and caused an accident that led to 63 learners, who were on board, being injured and hospitalised at the local medical facility."
A grade 8 boy pupil and a grade 10 girl pupil who were on the bus lost their lives.
Mabona says the driver is reportedly receiving medical attention in hospital.
"Reports have now confirmed that the driver of the bus is in fact currently in hospital receiving medical attention and did not flee the scene of the accident as purported previously. He was among the first to be rushed to hospital when the incident occurred.
"Our psychosocial support team will be dispatched to the school to provide urgent trauma support, which will also be extended to the families of the deceased learners.
”We call upon all our scholar transport drivers to always be alert and make sure our learners travel safely at all times," adds Mabona.
