Bushiri vows to compensate victims’ families
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, has vowed to compensate the families of the three people who died in his church in December.
Bushiri appeared before the CRL Rights Commission on Monday to explain the circumstances leading to the stampede and loss of life.
The hearing will include testimonies from Bushiri, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), families of the deceased and officials from Johannesburg and Tshwane.
The investigation follows a complaint laid by Sanco, with the organisation saying the church should be shut down after the deaths of the women.

Bushiri says he and his wife, Mary Bushir, have already met two families and is in the process of meeting with the last family.
"Despite it being an accident the church - as earlier communicated - took full responsibility of everything that happened because it happened at the church premises and those passed away were members of the ECG family."
Bushiri says he is using the church's money to compensate the victims’ families.
"So it can help meet the responsibility gap left by those that died."
