Fees Must Fall activist Bonginkosi Khanyile has been sentenced to three years house arrest for crimes he committed during the student protest in 2016.

Khanyile appeared in the Durban Regional Court on Monday.
The student activist made headlines when he was arrested and held without bail for nearly six months between 2016 and 2017.
Khanyile was last year convicted of four of the 13 charges with which he was originally charged including public violence, possession of a dangerous weapon, and failing to comply with police instruction during fees must fall protests in 2016.

Khanyile led a group of students that walked to the Union Buildings from KwaZulu-Natal, calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa and the government to release all those jailed for Fees Must Fall related activities.
The Durban University of Technology student was also ordered to pay a R5000 fine or serve a three-year prison sentence, suspended for five years.
Khanyile will only be allowed to leave his place of residence to attend university.
In handing down his ruling, magistrate Siphiwe Hlophe said that he understood the need for the protest, but could not condone the violence that ensued.
