Cabinet approves NHI Bill

Cabinet has approved the tabling of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill in Parliament.
Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu said the NHI would give effect to the government’s plan for universal quality health care services for all South Africans no matter their socio-economic circumstances.
Briefing the media on the cabinet meeting, Mthembu siad the bill went through public consultations between June and September 2018.

"The input received from this process will be incorporated into this latest version which will be subjected to another rigorous parliamentary process.
"It will be based on the values of justice, fairness and social solidarity. It will address the current health system that serves only 16% of South Africans, whilst excluding the overwhelming majority of South Africans."

Mthembu says once the bill is passed it would be amended to allow for different phases to be implemented.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize would soon give more details on the bill.
