Calm before heavy and devastating storm, warns Mkhize

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has risen by 27 since Tuesday, peaking at a total of 1380 confirmed cases by Wednesday.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize released the latest stats on Wednesday after launching and showcasing 60 mobile testing units in Johannesburg.


More than 44 000 people in South African have been tested for the disease – the large majority undertaken in private labs.


Mkhize pointed out that despite the rise in cases, the number is still fairly low.


“In Gauteng we’ve got 645, in Western Cape we’ve got 326, in KwaZulu-Natal we’ve got 186, Free State we’ve got 76, North West 9, Northern Cape 7, Eastern Cape 15, Mpumalanga remains at 12 and Limpopo remains at 14.”

“We may be experiencing a calm before a heavy and devastating storm,” Mkhize warned.


“There will be no time to prepare what we have not already out in place. Particularly in the next seven days we need every plan to be put in place.”


He adds the slow rise in cases could be a testament to the effectiveness of the 21-day national lockdown.

Sale of cigarette remains illegal, says Cogta

Numerous retailers took cigarettes off their shelves after the lockdown took effect - suspending the sale of cigarettes and various other goods and products. Despite these regulations in place, the Western Cape local government announced that cigarettes may be sold during the lockdown, but only together with essential goods.
