The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services unit has denied reports that firefighters responded to “heat spots” in the basement of the gutted National Assembly.

On Wednesday afternoon Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo issued a statement indicating that structural engineers from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure have picked up some heat at certain spots on the basement of the building.
“The Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service officials who responded to heat detected at certain spots in the basement of the gutted National Assembly building this afternoon have, after conducting the inspection, expressed satisfaction that the heat posed no potential for a flare-up or danger to anyone.
“As stressed earlier, this was a precautionary measure, and there was no immediate danger to either the inspectors or the general parliamentary community. The fire department will submit a full report on this to Parliament.”
However, the Cape Town Fire department’s Jermaine Carelse dismissed the reports, saying they have not received a call from Parliament.
“We did not respond or get any call of a fire incident from Parliament today or this morning, I don’t know where they got the information, but we were not there.”
Parliament was engulfed by flames last month. One person has since been arrested in connection with the fire.
