Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Tshwane House in the Pretoria CBD has been vanadalised after workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) stormed the building on Tuesday.
The union's regional secretary Mpho Tladinyane says the city has backtracked on a decision made to pay workers outstanding salaries.
" Workers were supposed to be paid on the 24th of July 2020 as per our agreement. The administrators are now claiming poverty, but we know that there is money in the City," he said.
Tladinyane confirmed there was a standoff between workers and police but said the situation had calmed down.
In a statement released by the City, head administrator, Mpho Nawa said in a meeting held with SAMWU and the Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union (IMATU) last month, the was no agreement as SAMWU representatives walked out.
"The meeting collapsed as there was no quorum," said Nawa
Tladinyane said workers are willing to occupy Tshwane House until their demands are heard.
