City Power in race against time to update prepaid meters in Joburg
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
City Power is in a race against time to ensure all prepaid electricity customers in Johannesburg have access to the updated tokens they need to prevent their meters from becoming non-operational.

All prepaid meters based on the old technology will stop dispensing electricity in November 2024.
The power utility's spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the replacement and resetting of prepaid meters is crucial ahead of the token identifier (TID) rollover project.
"This task seeks to ensure that all smart pre-paid meters are TID-compliant. Most of the meters are not SMART and the TID resetting entails that every non-smart meter should be replaced with the new technology meters and reset to be TID compliant.
Mangena warned prepaid meters will stop working next year unless they are updated.
"The credit token will run out of available numbers unless they are reset. The customers that have already bought electricity units when the meters get changed will be carried over according to the units found on the meter".
The project will also help the city to ease the ongoing energy crisis.
"The installed smart meters will assist us and the residents of Johannesburg in reducing electricity consumption through the usage of remote load-limiting functions and ultimately contribute to the management and reduction of load shedding,” said Mangena.
This is done through the smart meters’ ability to control customers' electricity use by targeting energy-hungry appliances.
