R13m payment sees Joburg reconnect Sun City, Leeuwkop prisons
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
City of Johannesburg has reconnected services to the Leeuwkop Prison and Joburg Prison (also known as Sun City) after the Department of Correctional Services settled it R13 million municipal bill.
The two prisons were cut off after the city embarked on a disconnection operation last week targeting defaulting customers.
On Friday, the city shut down water supply at Leeuwkop Prison.
The department paid R9.8 million of its debt for Leeuwkop Prison, while the remaining R3.2 million was paid for Johannesburg Prison on Saturday.
“As the city we will continue to go on aggressive campaigns to collect the huge money that is owed to the city. Residents should understand that without them playing their part by paying for services they consume; we are unable to render services as a municipality. We are left with no choice but to cut our services to those who owe us,” said the City’s Group CFO, Tebo Moraka
"Some of the city's 10 worst defaulters include a hotel, a prison, large residential estates, a private retirement village, panel beating business and large firms that collectively owe the city more than R104 million on unpaid services.
"At the properties where the city found illegal electricity and water connections, the city swiftly removed all its infrastructure which included water and electricity meters and cables," added Moraka.
