City Power bemoans spike in streetlight theft, vandalism

City Power has called on residents of Johannesburg to help report the vandalism and theft of streetlights in Joburg.

eThekwini Municipality has launched an investigation following claims that the City forked out R579m for a two-year contract to fix and maintain street lights across the metro.

In the past six months, the utility recorded an increasing number of streetlights which have been vandalised or stolen, especially in the Roodepoort area.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said City Power has recorded about 1,000 incidents of vandalism and theft between July 2023 and January 2024.

"This criminal activity not only poses a significant threat to the functionality of essential infrastructure but also jeopardises the safety of the city’s residents. Diminished visibility raises safety concerns for community well-being.

"Some of these incidents happen during load shedding, which provides a wide window of opportunity for criminals to target and damage infrastructure, particularly at night."

"The prevalence of illegal miners, especially in Florida, adds to our challenges, as some of these zama-zamas often resort to stealing and vandalising our network."
