City Power: Cable faults delaying Naturena power restoration

Persistent cable faults have delayed attempts by City Power to restore power in Naturena and surrounding areas in the south of Johannesburg.

Residents in the area have been without power since Thursday morning after a trip at the Eikenhof substation.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the trip has affected at least three feeder boxes.

“Last night we managed to locate one of the faults and we started repairing and replaced 200m of the cable yesterday (Friday). We are now doing final joints so that we can repair one of the three feeder cables to the load centres in Naturena so that we can restore customers while we are locating the other two faults.”

“The contributing factors to the delays is that upon completion of repairs to each identified fault the cable continued to test down suggesting that there were further faults along the same stream so we had to walk further kilometres to try and locate more of these faults so we would be able to restore.”

Mangena says they hope to restore power by Saturday.

“The area is plagued by cable theft, so while we are busy doing fault-finding you find that there is a cable that has been stolen in one area or the other. So we are trying to complete repair and restore electricity by later today.”
