The customers will only experience 2-hour outages up until the implementation of stage 8.

City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava says the move will also ensure that the city is able to decide which areas to loadshed while adhering to the megawatts requirements of  Eskom.

"City Power has, over the years and months, conducted some simulations and network reconfiguration to ensure a smooth transition to the new schedule. We have already started a few months ago with the gradual exclusion of most of our industrial, large business customers.

“This exclusion has also been extended to most essential services, including health facilities and water, with work underway to ensure more essential services are excluded.

“Our engagement with Eskom throughout this transition has been cordial and very fruitful.

“We have made a commitment to Eskom to ensure that the security of supply and the integrity and stability of the national grid are not compromised by the new changes.

“For us, the greatest benefit is the lessened impact of load-shedding on our customers with this new schedule," she said.

Mashava said the move will also fast-track the plans to exempt businesses and essential services from load shedding.

"The new schedule will cover about 98% of City Power customers within the city, with few customers in Tshepisong, Lufhereng (Roodepoort), Hoagland, Maroeladal, Morningside, Riverclub, Dainfern, Bloubosrand, Kyasands, Bellairspark(Randburg), Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley, Willowway (Midrand), Marlboro.

“Transit Camp (Alexandra) continue to be loadshed by Eskom due to the technical complexities.

“Work will continue between Eskom and City Power to ensure these areas are also brought into the City Power load-shedding schedule," Mashava added.
