City Power transformer burns to the ground
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
City Power's transformer substation in Brixton was completely gutted in a fire on Sunday evening.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, but the Johannesburg power entity says everything will need to be replaced.
Teams were deployed to the area to determine the cause of the fire and the exact extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water says as a result of the fire, pumping from the Brixton reservoir to the Brixton tower and zones will be affected.
The water entity says a pumping unit is being organised for the Helen Joseph Hospital.
This comes while Johannesburg Water is still continuing to monitor reservoirs and towers following last week’s major power outage that left thousands of residents battling dry taps.
Although water was pumped again at full capacity on Thursday evening, various parts are still dry as the system battles to fill up and keep up with demand.
On Sunday evening, Johannesburg Water said the system had shown siginificant improvement.
