The governing party says the volunteer was attacked in Duduza on Sunday, while on duty during the IEC’s voter registration weekend.

It says the woman sustained injuries on her face, including a cut on her lips.

The newly formed MK Party hit the headlines after former president Jacob Zuma said he would campaign and vote for the party, leading to his suspension from the ANC.

The ANC's Jongizizwe Dlabathi said any election-related violence must be dealt with by law enforcement.

“Unfortunately, one of the MK party members, as allegedly reported to our operation centre, had a confrontation with one of our members of the ANC, who really did nothing to her, but for her personal reasons, she ended up beating one of our volunteers. Unfortunately, in that process, our volunteers were reported to have been cut. In fact, they did share with us a photo that confirms that incident.

“We then advised her to go and open a case at one of the nearest police stations. Unfortunately, we got a report that the same perpetrator would have gone to the police station, trying to falsify that she was attacked by our ANC member and she opened a counter-case. So, when our volunteer opened a case there was already a counter-case against her.

“We are still going to interact with our volunteers because we strongly feel that a case must be opened, and we must allow the justice system to make that investigation,” added Dlabathi.

In response to the claims, the MK Party said they are investigating the incident.
