The bus was set alight early on Friday morning.

It is understood the suspects stormed into the bus, chased out the commuters and held the bus driver at gunpoint.

Tshwane Transport MMC Katlego Mathebe says they suspect it may have been a revenge attack by striking bus drivers who are facing dismissal.

"This happened against the backdrop of the city’s administration taking action against bus drivers who partook in an illegal strike. I condemn this behaviour in the strongest possible terms.

"Such criminal acts do not only undermine our efforts to provide reliable and affordable public transport to our commuters but also threaten the safety of dedicated bus drivers and commuters.

"I encourage the security cluster to continue to do more to ensure that the perpetrators face the full force of the law and to restore order."

The city is grappling with an illegal strike by municipal workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

Workers downed tools in July, demanding salary increases. However, the city maintains it cannot afford the demands.

Over 100 employees have since been fired since the start of the strike.

The Olievenhoutbosch bus service has been suspended until further notice.
