Rand Water has blamed the lack of water supply on a series of power outages, which it said delayed the recovery of its system.

This has left parts of Tshwane without water since the weekend, with residents resorting to opening fire hydrants for access to water.

Tshwane’s Health MMC Rina Marx says they are working on temporary solutions to assist the affected health facilities.

“On 3 July 2023, the City of Tshwane Health Department had to close Olievenhoutbosch Clinic due to water shortages. After the water supply was restored, the clinic reopened on the morning of 4 July 2023. Similarly, Lotus Gardens Clinic has been experiencing a water shortage.

“Arrangements are being made to fill the backup water tank at the facility.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Cilliers Brink confirmed on Tuesday that Rand Water had assured him that the current water supply issues in parts of the city are not linked to the city’s debt to the utility.

The city and several other municipalities, including Emfuleni, Rand West, Merafong, Ngwathe, and Govan Mbeki local municipalities owe Rand Water some R4 billion.
