Coal mine planned ‘on doorstep’ of Kruger National Park
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency says submissions are currently being gathered for the proposed coal mine.
Environmental impact assessments are underway following plans to expand a coal mine to Malelane in Mpumalanga.
“We weigh the benefit to the community versus the impact that it would have in the long term to the environment,” says Mpumalanga tourism and parks CEO Boy Nobunga.
Organisation AfriForum has already indicated that they will oppose the application due to insufficient public consultations and participation.

Objections have also been raised around the possible polluting of the Crocodile River.
Nobunga says although residents stand to benefit from the expansion of Nkomati Mine, the environmental impact study and government's stance on the mining industry will be considered.

“One needs to stress that the government of South Africa has taken a decision that issues of conservation and mining can coexist together – so that coexistence is guided by the cost-benefit analysis.”
